Seasons of Life and War

Razi Rum / Tefer

Memories are elusive. Sometimes they are sharp and clear, sometimes blurry and fragmented. Some memories appear as a detailed picture, and others seem like a flash from a movie. Our fragile collection of memories is the story of our lives, sometimes we tell it orally and sometimes we leave it unwritten.

This book brings together chapters from different periods and different places. In clear language, with complete honesty, and out of a deep need to document, Razi Rom wrote about the people and places, the struggles and victories that made up his life.

At the heart of the book is a vivid and evocative documentation of fighting in Sinai during the Yom Kippur War, a war that left its mark in evil and loss, and in fact never ended.

Rom's life experiences move along the seam line between the personal and the national. The story of his extended family's exile and immigration, the stories of his childhood between the sacred and the profane, the stories of his growing up in Tel Aviv and his military service as a fighter, and the stories of his coming of age as a career man and family man are all intertwined with the story of the country, which he has developed as he has developed.

The book was written in the hope that its readers will find themselves in it, that the points of light within it will shine within them as well.
