Alongside classical Greek poetry, from Homer to the Hellenistic poets, stands the vast collection of epigrams, the "Greek Anthology." This collection includes some 4,000 epigrams – "inscription" poems – written over a period of over a thousand years, first in Greece, from the seventh century BCE, and then throughout the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine worlds until the sixth century CE.
