The book begins with a photograph of a woman's face, who has just entered the gruesome gates of the Auschwitz extermination camp. The year is 1942, and the camp photographer does not look at the prisoner for more than a few seconds, before moving on to the next in line. 50 years later, an Israeli photographer randomly encounters the photograph of the woman. He cannot take his eyes off her, and makes her the object of his creation and love.
