Mathilde and Etienne's wonderful love lasted for five years, until one day Etienne got up and left the house without any explanation. Heartbroken Mathilde tries to maintain her routine as a high school literature teacher in the suburbs of Paris, but in a moment of lack of control she lashes out at one of her beloved students and loses her job as well.
