Della's mother and her 16-year-old sister Sookie are incarcerated in prison for using drugs that caused an explosion in a hotel. They do not know their father and do not even know if they both have the same father. The mother's friend, Mr. Clifton, gathers them to his house, but due to a terrible and terrible act - which will be told later, in the difficult things section, they are forced to escape.
