In early modern Europe, black skin was seen as inferior. This is how the Turk/Muslim and the Jew were also perceived. Evidence of this can be found in the writings of senior scholars (humanists), the founders of Western culture, chief among them Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (1536-1466), the prince of the humanists.
